On November 21, 2021, Juan Guaidó, the Interim President of Venezuela, announced that Hugo Chávez’s handpicked successor, Nicolás Maduro, would be stepping down from office and leaving the country. Maduro was the President of Venezuela from 2013 to 2021 and is associated with the country’s ongoing crisis.

Juan Guaidó was born and raised in Venezuela and is the head of Venezuela’s National Assembly. He gained immense popularity in 2019 for rallying the opposition against Maduro, gaining international support, and being the recognized ruler of Venezuela by the United States, over 50 countries, and other democracies.

Maduro ruled Venezuela with an iron fist while being backed by the socialist revolution began by Hugo Chávez who died in 2013 due to cancer. Maduro inherited and continued the policies of Chávez, which led to widespread protests and bloodshed in the country.

As with many authoritarian regimes, the last straw for Maduro came to visit when the United States, the European Union (EU), and other countries threatened massive sanctions against the government, effectively killing the economy and leading to massive amounts of inflation and a scarcity in groceries.

The sanctions were applied mostly due to the fact that Venezuelans were unable to have medical treatment, food, and essential infrastructure due to the lack of government, finance, and support.
